Efficiently Liquefying Biomethane

The liquefaction of biomethane—also known as bio-LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)—is an innovative step toward the efficient use of renewable energy sources. It opens up new possibilities for using biogas not only in stationary applications for energy generation but also as a sustainable fuel for transportation and mobility. By cooling purified biomethane to approximately –162 °C, the gas is converted into a liquid state. This reduces its volume by a factor of 600. This enormous compression saves space, facilitates transport and storage, and makes biomethane particularly versatile. Bio-LNG is thus a renewable alternative to fossil LNG and contributes significantly to reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

4 Steps to Bio-LNG

The process of converting organic waste into liquefied biomethane involves several stages:

  1. First, the raw biogas is purified during biogas processing. This removes CO₂, sulfur, and water, resulting in pure biomethane.

  2. The next step is pre-cooling, in which recycled cold is used to gradually lower the gas to low temperatures.

  3. This is followed by the actual liquefaction: In a multi-stage refrigeration system, the biomethane is cooled to approximately –162 °C and converted into a liquid state.

  4. Finally, the produced bio-LNG can be stored in insulated tanks and transported. This enables its particularly efficient use as a sustainable fuel.
