The initial situation

Environmental protection and sustainability are key priorities for the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy in Salzburg. The aim is to reduce waste volumes, use resources more efficiently and, at the same time, cut CO₂ emissions from day-to-day operations.

A more space-saving and efficient solution was therefore also required for the collection of plastic waste. Until now, ten 1,100-litre waste bins had been used for this purpose.

The challenge

The large number of individual bins takes up a lot of floor space and makes collection and emptying very labour-intensive. At the same time, frequent collections result in additional transport journeys.

A centralised solution was therefore sought that could accommodate larger volumes, reduce the space required and be easily integrated into the hospital’s daily operations.

The solution

Today, a PÖTTINGER MP 1.0 compactor container handles the central collection and compaction of plastic waste.

Thanks to the high compaction ratio of up to 5:1, significantly more material can be collected in the same space. This means fewer collections are required.

In addition, ‘nearly full’ and ‘full’ notifications ensure that the container is only emptied when it is actually necessary. This reduces transport journeys, eases the burden on waste management logistics and helps to reduce CO₂ emissions.

The solution also offers advantages in day-to-day operation: the waste is collected cleanly and tidily within a closed system, handling is straightforward and the collection point remains organised.
