The initial situation

With around 192,500 m² of retail space, 4,500 employees and 22.3 million visitors per year, Shopping City Süd – SCS for short – is Austria’s largest shopping centre and one of the largest in Europe.

The resulting waste streams are correspondingly diverse. Different sectors such as retail, catering and infrastructure each have their own specific requirements regarding collection, compaction and waste disposal logistics.

The challenge

In a site of this scale, large quantities of different types of waste must be processed reliably and as efficiently as possible. At the same time, the spatial conditions and requirements at the individual waste collection points vary significantly.

What was needed, therefore, was not a standard solution, but a comprehensive concept that combines different types of machinery whilst also providing a centralised overview of all facilities.

The solution

A total of 24 compactors from PÖTTINGER are in operation at eight waste disposal points across the site. The systems deployed have been specifically tailored to the respective requirements of the locations and waste streams.

Almost all solutions from the PÖTTINGER range of compactors are in use – including the MP 1.9 and MP 1.4 compactor containers, stationary SSC screw compactors with docking containers, mobile MSC screw compactors, as well as ECO Static and ECO roll-off units.

The combination of different systems enables efficient and site-specific waste disposal across the entire site.

Digitally connected with falconic

SCS uses falconic to maintain a central overview of its numerous machines. The location, machine status and fill level of individual units can be clearly viewed at any time.

Notifications to the relevant waste management contractor or designated contact persons can be set up on an individual basis. This makes it easier to plan collections, identify downtime at an early stage and efficiently manage waste disposal logistics across all sites.
